Build Leadership Muscle

I recently took a strength training class for runners.  It was all body weight exercises yet the next day I was so sore that I could barely walk much less run.  It amazed me that muscles I use everyday could be that impacted by a few relatively simple movements. 

Think for a minute about leadership as if it were a muscle.  How much of your time is spent on routine exercise as compared to challenging development?  One of the reasons executive coaching is so effective is because it provides focused time for leadership development. That said with or without a coach it is critical for leaders to take that time on a regular basis.  Set an appointment with yourself at least weekly to spend an hour or more building your leadership muscles.  Spend time thinking about how you can be more effective as a leader, talking with your employees to understand them better, considering new and different approaches to existing challenges or simply reflecting on recent lessons learned.  It sounds simple but the benefits can be game changing…
